The story of the night

Same rooms. Same people. One very different night.

Here's why we want to do this, and how it all comes together.

01

Why we're doing this

Every night, our community lives across a bunch of Zoom rooms. Each one has its own hosts, its own regulars and its own energy. People float from room to room, say hi to familiar faces and land wherever feels right. That's what makes us, us.

But we rarely get to feel like one big community at the same time.

So for Halloween, we want to throw one party that runs through every room at once. Nobody has to leave their favorite room. Nothing about how the rooms work changes. We just add a little magic on top: costumes, a shared screen called BOO! TV, some friendly competition and a big reveal that everyone gets to celebrate together.

Same rooms. Same people. Just a little more trick, a lot more treat. 🎃

The vibe

Picture a sexy gay nightclub poster that wandered into a classic horror movie and decided to stay for the camp. That's us.

Our cast of characters: a shirtless, clawed Freddy-inspired heartbreaker. A masked Michael Myers-inspired stud. A seductive vampire. A shirtless werewolf. A muscular creepy clown. Glamorous zombies and leather-clad villains. Basically, every horror icon, with a fun adult twist.

The world they live in: rolling fog, full moons, gothic towers, candlelight, blood-drip lettering and plenty of cheeky double meanings.

Our colors

Midnight black
Deep blood red
Dark plum & purple
Silver & metallic
A touch of orange

How we tease it

Instead of one crowded flyer, we drop a series of posters, each starring one character. Every drop keeps the buzz going all the way to Halloween.

BOO! TV, the screen that ties it all together

This is the heart of the night. BOO! TV is one shared slideshow that shows up in every room that wants it, with the room owner's blessing.

While you're chatting in your usual room, BOO! TV quietly rotates through everyone's costumes, names, voting reminders, Halloween graphics, announcements and, at the end, the big winner reveal. Wherever you are, you're seeing the same party.

One team runs the slideshow from one place. When a new costume gets the thumbs up, it shows up everywhere. No one has to rebuild slides at midnight.

Real talk

Separate Zoom rooms can't automatically share one screen, so we'll test it first. The plan is a dedicated BOO! TV "guest" in each room that plays the slideshow as its camera. Rooms that prefer can just screen-share it now and then instead.

Why a video tile

As its own little tile in the gallery, BOO! TV hangs out in the room like another guest. Nobody's conversation gets interrupted by a big screen share.

Show us your tricks

Starting October 22, everyone gets one easy link to send in a costume photo. It works on any phone, no tech skills needed.

We only ask for four things, and nothing personal beyond that:

1Your costume photo
2Your display name
3A category, if you want one
4Your OK to show it on BOO! TV

Then a quick look before it goes live

Every photo lands in a private queue first. Someone on the team takes a look, gives it the thumbs up, and it pops onto the gallery and BOO! TV on its own.

The point

Real people keep it safe and fun. The tech does the boring part, so nobody's stuck downloading, resizing and uploading photos all night.

05

Voting, and the categories

Everyone gets the same voting link, no matter which room they're hanging out in. Browse the looks, pick your favorites, done.

Categories coming soon

Our category crew is cooking these up right now. 🧪 This is where they'll land.

Keeping it fair

Equal timeMain entries close before voting opens, so every costume gets the same shot.
Last-minute looksDressed up on Halloween day? There's a separate wildcard round just for you.
Clear rulesWho can vote, how many times and until when, all set ahead of time.
Double-checkedResults get verified before any winner is announced.
06

Keeping it easy and safe

We want this to be simple, not a tech project. So we stick to trusted, well-known tools instead of building anything risky from scratch.

Sending photosA trusted photo-upload form guests can use without an account
Storing themPrivate cloud storage only organizers can reach
ApprovingA simple approval list or dashboard
Showing themA browser slideshow that updates itself
In ZoomThe BOO! TV guest, or a screen share
VotingA trusted voting tool that stops duplicate votes

Our promises to everyone

  • A real person approves every photo before anyone sees it
  • Unapproved photos stay private, always
  • Guests never have to make an account
  • Organizer accounts use two-step login
  • Only a few people can edit anything
  • Only normal photo files, at sensible sizes
  • Clear rules about what's OK to post, and your permission first
  • Photos get deleted after the event, on a set date
  • No live, unchecked photo feeds
  • Strictly adults 18+

From photo to screen

Photo sent→Private queue→Team says yes→Gallery updates→Live on BOO! TV

The only job for a human is saying yes. Everything else happens on its own, which means a small team can run the whole community's party.
